The Fireman's Axe (also referred to as Fireman's Axe Espag Drive or Restricted Access Budget Drive), is a specialised window hardware product designed for emergency access applications and smoke ventilation. It consists of a spindle drive mechanism that can be operated using a special key.
This hardware is primarily installed on windows in buildings where emergency services may need quick access from inside the building in case of fire or other emergencies.
The system typically includes two main components: the spindle drive mechanism that is installed on the window frame, and a corresponding key. The hardware allows authorized emergency personnel to quickly open windows from the inside to provide smoke ventilation/ egress.
The Fireman's Axe Spindle Drive hardware is versatile and can be installed on multiple window types. According to technical documentation, it is suitable for:
PVCu windows
Aluminum windows
Timber windows
This versatility makes it appropriate for a wide range of building types and architectural styles, from modern commercial buildings to more traditional structures.
The Fireman's Axe Spindle Drive is available in a couple of different finish options to match various window designs and architectural requirements:
SAA (Satin Anodised Aluminium) - This is the standard finish
Black anodised - Available on request
PPC (Powder Coated) finishes - These are available in RAL colours on request.
It's worth noting that painted finishes are generally not recommended for this product as they can interfere with smooth operation. Anodised finishes are preferable for optimal functionality.
Lead times vary depending on the finish selected and current stock levels:
SAA (Satin Anodised Aluminium): Some stock is typically available for immediate supply. However, if restocking is in process, the wait time can be 1-3 weeks and for large orders, the lead time extends to approximately 6 weeks.
Black anodised: This finish requires a longer production time with a lead time of around 6 weeks.
Customers planning projects with tight timelines should enquire about current stock levels when placing orders.
The Fireman's Axe Spindle Drive operates through a specialised mechanism designed for emergency access. The system consists of a spindle drive installed on the window and a corresponding key.
The key interfaces with a socket on the window hardware, allowing authorised personnel to turn the mechanism and open the window from the inside. This design ensures that only those with the proper equipment can open these windows, maintaining security while providing emergency access when needed for egress/ ventilation.
The product's design is specifically engineered to ensure reliable operation in emergency situations. Painted finishes can make the product difficult to operate smoothly, which is why anodised finishes are recommended for optimal functionality.
